To blur a license plate for free: upload a photo → Verpixle detects the plate automatically → download the result. No sign-up, servers in the EU, privacy-focused, in seconds. German and EU license plates are detected – even at an angle, small, or partially obscured. If you like, Verpixle blurs faces in the same step.
When do I have to blur a license plate?
A vehicle license plate counts as personal data, because a person can be identified through it – via a keeper lookup. As soon as you publish photos with a readable plate, you should make it unrecognizable. Typical cases:
- Sales listings (Kleinanzeigen, mobile.de, AutoScout24) – see anonymize car photos.
- Social media – Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, forums.
- Dashcam and accident photos that you share or post.
- Real estate and construction site photos showing parked vehicles.
Note: This is not legal advice. There is no blanket legal requirement; when publishing, however, blurring is recommended and often required under data protection law.
Step by step: blurring a license plate
- Upload a photo. Drag the image into the field on the homepage – no account, right in your browser.
- Detect automatically. Verpixle finds the license plate and blurs it. Choose strength „Strong“ so nothing can be reconstructed.
- Download. Save the result in full resolution – done.
Blur, black out, or stickers?
All three methods make the license plate unrecognizable, but they differ:
- Blurring – looks natural and is the standard online. Sufficient strength is key; a strong blur is practically irreversible.
- Blacking out / bars – maximally secure, but looks more technical. Useful for documents.
- Physical stickers on the car – only for the photo setup; not possible after the fact once the image already exists.
Verpixle relies on a strong blur whose strength you control from light to strong. For license plates we recommend „Strong“.
How reliably are license plates detected?
License plate detection runs on a YOLOv11 model with high input resolution (up to 1920 px), so even small or distant plates on 4K photos are found. Detection performance by shot:
| Shooting situation | Detection |
|---|---|
| Frontal & clearly readable | Very good |
| At an angle / up to approx. 45° | Very good |
| Small / far away (4K photo) | Good |
| Partially obscured / dirty | Good |
| Strong reflection / backlight | Limited |
Values are based on the model architecture used (YOLOv11, imgsz 1920) and typical photos. In difficult lighting, give the result a quick visual check.
Frequently asked questions
How do I blur a license plate for free?
Upload the photo to Verpixle – the license plate is detected and blurred automatically. Then download the result in full resolution. Free, no sign-up, servers in the EU.
Do I have to blur license plates on photos?
A license plate can be personal data, because it can be used to identify the registered keeper. There is no blanket legal requirement, but when publishing photos, blurring is recommended and often required under data protection law. This is not legal advice.
Blurring or blacking out – which is safer?
Both make the license plate unrecognizable. What matters is the strength: a strong blur destroys the information practically irreversibly. Verpixle uses a strong level; for license plates we recommend „Strong“.
Can a blurred license plate be made visible again?
Not with a sufficiently strong blur. Verpixle discards the original pixels – there is no hidden original layer. Only extremely weak pixelation would theoretically be vulnerable.
Does the tool also detect foreign and EU license plates?
Yes. The model detects German and common EU license plate formats, even at an angle, small, or partially obscured. For unusual formats, we recommend a quick visual check.
Can I also blur license plates in videos?
Yes. Verpixle also processes videos (MP4, MOV) and blurs license plates across all frames. Resolution and audio are preserved.
