Blur faces

Make faces in photos and videos unrecognizable in seconds – even in the background. Free, no sign-up, servers in the EU.

How to blur faces: Upload a photo or video → Verpixle automatically looks for faces, including small, profile, and background faces → download and briefly review the result. No sign-up, in full resolution, servers in the EU, privacy-focused. Optionally, blur license plates in the same step.

Why make faces unrecognizable?

As soon as other people are recognizable in a photo or video, publishing it touches on the right to one's own image (§ 22 KunstUrhG) and the GDPR. Without the consent of those pictured, you risk cease-and-desist and damages claims – for example, with passersby in vacation, event, or construction-site photos, or with people in the background of a product shot. Blurring faces protects both the people pictured and you as the publisher.

Step by step: blur faces

  1. Upload a photo or video. Drag your file into the box on the homepage – no account, right in your browser. JPG, PNG, MP4, and MOV are supported.
  2. Let it detect automatically. Verpixle also looks for small, profile, and background faces and blurs detected areas. The strength can be set from light to heavy.
  3. Download. Save the result in full resolution. The original and the result are deleted automatically afterward.

Detection designed for challenging images

Face detection runs on the YuNet model, which is specifically designed to handle small and profile faces too. The overview below shows detection performance by situation:

Capture situationDetection
Frontal & closeVery good
Side / profileGood
Small / in the background / crowdGood
Partially obscured (mask, glasses, hair)Good
Heavy blur / backlightingLimited

Values are based on the model architecture (YuNet) and typical footage. In tricky lighting, give the result a quick visual check and set the strength to “Heavy” if needed.

Faces and license plates in one step

Many photos show not just people but also cars in the background. Verpixle detects faces and vehicle license plates at the same time – you don't need to use two tools one after another. Just select both before you blur. Learn more on the Blur license plates page.

Common questions

Is blurring faces free?

Yes. Blurring faces in photos and short videos is free and requires no sign-up. Fair limits apply to file size and video length.

Do I have to make other people's faces unrecognizable before I publish a photo?

Usually yes. Showing other people recognizably touches on the right to one's own image (§ 22 KunstUrhG) and the GDPR. Without consent, you should blur other people's faces before publishing. This is not legal advice.

Does Verpixle also detect small faces, faces in profile, or faces in the background?

Yes. The YuNet model used here also detects small, profile, and partially obscured faces – such as passersby or people in crowds. With very heavy blur or backlighting, we recommend a quick visual check.

Are faces in videos blurred too?

Yes. Verpixle anonymizes faces in videos (MP4, MOV) as well and tracks them across the individual frames. Resolution and audio track are preserved. Learn more under Anonymize video.

What happens to my uploaded photos?
